Pack sustenance
I’ve not included drinks in this as when going through airport security, you are not allowed to take drinks or cartons through with you. So, be prepared to purchase drinks on the other side! However, there is nothing stopping you filling up your hand luggage with individually wrapped treats that can keeping you going, especially if you face a delay. You are a captive audience in an airport and food items can be slightly more expensive than normal so packing your own treats will ensure damage limitations on the monetary front. Besides, no matter where you travel, it’s always nice to have some home comforts!
Keep children occupied
This is easier than you can imagine! Without spending a fortune, buy items such as colouring pencils, paper, books, teddy bears, sticker sets and the like before you travel… and wrap them individually with colourful paper. It may seem like a painstaking task however the smiles and excitement of unwrapping the new gifts and then playing with them will ensure an easier travel experience.
Pack spare clothes
You truly can never be too prepared when travelling with children, extra baby wipes are a necessity for keeping everyone fresh. However a spare change of clothes always come in handy in case of any accidents or spillages, making travel slightly fresher for everyone and less stressful!
Check In Early
Although this will require extra time spent at the airport before boarding, checking in early will give you a better chance of being seated together if you have not paid to book your seats in advance. Airlines such as EasyJet allow families with children 5 years and under to board early. The company state that children under the age of 2 years can sit on your lap for a fixed fee of £22. However it may well be worth checking out the ticket of an extra seat, if it is less than £22 then it may well be worthwhile to buy an extra seat for your child just for the extra space.
Making preparations
If you are travelling to Europe, make sure each member of the travelling party has an EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card), this will give each card holder the right to state provided healthcare in the country they are visiting. For extra peace of mind, make sure you book travel insurance before you travel – not only can you ensure medical expenses are covered in the unfortunate event of an illness or accident, but travel insurance also covers lost luggage and much much more.
